The credential

What Is PMP Certification, and Why Does It Matter?

The Project Management Professional (PMP)® is the project management credential awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI). It is recognized across industries and around the world, and it shows employers that you can lead projects using predictive, agile and hybrid approaches.

If you manage projects, or want to, earning the PMP is one of the clearest ways to show it. The potential benefits are a higher salary, greater job security and more career options.

Benefits of attending

Benefits of Attending a PMP Boot Camp in Washington DC

Once you have decided the PMP is your next step, the question shifts from “should I do it?” to “how do I do it?” An accelerated, guaranteed path is a PMP Boot Camp: you cover every subject PMI outlines for the exam, practice with realistic mock exams, and learn test-taking strategy alongside a group of peers. Here is what that gets you.

Achieve your goal

It is always easier to plan test prep than to do it. When you spend your days making crucial decisions, your well-laid study plans often fall victim to diminished self-discipline by nightfall. An accelerated in-person PMP Boot Camp takes the temptation to postpone off the table and gives you space to immerse yourself in the material. Our courses remove the distractions of everyday life so you can focus fully on the coursework and be exam-ready in less time than if you studied on your own.

Retain more information

Our 4-day PMP Boot Camp gives you more than exposure to the fundamentals and concepts on the test. It is a focused educational experience with a rigorous schedule. Throughout the course you talk through concepts and situations with your instructor and peers, which grounds your learning so you can recall it when you need it.

Stay focused

Many enthusiastic applicants are stopped by the jargon-heavy style of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide). An expert instructor who translates the language into practical terms helps you grasp the content and test your understanding. A classroom of peers who share your goals also keeps you accountable. It is easy to lose focus alone at your desk with a book.

Connect real-world experience

Your years of practical experience are the most valuable thing you bring. Without them you would not be qualified to sit for the PMP exam in the first place. Distilling what you know from doing into the foundations and principles on the exam, however, can challenge even experienced project managers. Your instructor helps you connect your experience to the exam material and put what you learned on the job into context.

Dedicated support

Your PMP-certified trainer is an expert project manager with deep knowledge of the training materials and of exam readiness. Every student who enrolls in and completes the Certification Academy PMP Boot Camp receives one-on-one guidance from their trainer and an individualized learning plan based on their current proficiency and progress toward the education requirements.

Honest about the exam

How Hard Is It to Get PMP Certified?

The PMP exam is demanding, and many capable, high-performing project managers walk out with a failing score. They do not fail because they did not care or did not prepare. They fail because effort alone does not help if you are not sure what to study or how the exam asks its questions.

Part of the challenge is that you do not do your job by reading a scenario and picking the best answer from a list. Skills built through practice rather than instruction do not automatically translate to exam questions, much as a gifted guitarist who plays entirely by ear can struggle to read sheet music. The exam also rewards PMI’s way of doing things, which may differ from how your organization runs projects, so experienced managers can second-guess the right answer.

The preparation gap is real too. Many people start studying and never schedule the exam, and many underestimate how much structured practice the scenario-based format takes. A plan matters more than hours alone.

How Our PMP Boot Camp Closes the Gap

  • Instruction aimed at the exam: an expert instructor translates the PMBOK® Guide into practical terms and connects it to your experience.
  • Practice testing: realistic mock questions in class and a 90-day exam simulator with 1,000+ practice questions afterward.
  • An honest readiness check: a stoplight assessment at the end of class shows where you stand, and your instructor gives you the green light when you are ready.
  • A clear next step: application support and a readiness roadmap, so you know exactly what to do after class.

For experienced project managers looking for a practical, streamlined solution, the 4-day intensive Washington DC PMP Boot Camp is built to overcome that obstacle.

26%

Business Environment

Syllabus

PMP Boot Camp Syllabus: Four Days, Five Modules

Our curriculum is based on the PMBOK® Guide and uses a problem-based, collaborative approach, blended with simple memorization techniques to keep a large amount of material organized and memorable. Every part of the course is designed around one goal: your readiness to pass the PMP exam.

The exam has 180 questions in a mix of formats, including case studies, graphic-based questions, multiple choice and matching. To succeed you need to do more than memorize terms. The questions test your ability to remember, analyze, apply critical thinking and understand how components relate to one another.

How the exam tests what you know

The exam questions follow the learning levels in Bloom’s Taxonomy, so the course trains each one:

  • Remembering: recognizing facts, terms, basic concepts and answers.
  • Comprehending: showing understanding by organizing, comparing, interpreting and describing ideas.
  • Applying: using knowledge, techniques and rules to solve problems in new situations.
  • Analyzing: breaking information into parts, seeing how the parts relate, identifying causes and supporting conclusions with evidence.

Hands-on exercises in every class

  • Practice exercises aimed at different learning styles
  • Network diagram exercises
  • Earned value exercises
  • Chapter-specific practice tests
  • 90-day access to the online exam simulator

PMP Certification Frequently Asked Questions

Who can take the PMP exam?

Eligibility depends on your education and project experience, which PMI verifies. Our team helps with your PMI application. See the PMP requirements on our main PMP page.

How do I apply to sit for the exam?

Candidates complete an online application with the Project Management Institute (PMI). The application asks you to detail your work history and education. Once started, you have 90 days to complete it, and it auto-saves so you can come back to it. Once submitted, an employee of PMI reviews it.

It typically takes about 3 to 5 business days to review your application. Once approved, you receive an email from PMI with an eligibility code. You need this code to pay for and schedule the second part of the process: the exam.

How do I schedule a time to sit for the exam?

Once you are eligible, the scheduling instructions from PMI direct you to Pearson VUE to select a date and location. The PMP exam is computer-based and may be scheduled at any available testing site or online.

Scheduling the exam. Once PMI approves you and you pay the exam fee, you can schedule with Pearson VUE. You have one year from approval to take the exam, and you may take it up to three times during that eligibility period. A complete list of testing locations is on the Pearson VUE PMI page.

Sitting for the exam. The exam is taken at a Pearson VUE test center or online. It has 180 questions (170 scored and 10 unscored) and a 240-minute (4-hour) time limit, including two 10-minute breaks. Questions cover three domains: People 33%, Process 41% and Business Environment 26%. Question types include case and scenario studies, graphic-based questions, multiple choice (single and multiple response), matching, pull-down lists and point-and-click. At the end you see a preliminary result, and PMI confirms your official result afterward.

How much does the PMP Boot Camp in Washington DC cost?

Tuition for the 4-day PMP Boot Camp is $1,999 and is shown with each class in the schedule above. It includes the 35 contact hours, the student workbook, the exam simulator with 1,000+ practice questions and 90-day access, and Exam Assurance. The PMI exam fee is separate.

Are there funding options for government employees, contractors and military members?

Government employees, contractors and military members may have training funding options through their agency, employer or benefits. See our guide to military and government funding for where to start.

How much does it cost to sit for the PMP exam?

The exam costs $425 for PMI members and $675 for non-members. The annual PMI membership fee is $164, so you reduce your cost if you become a member before you schedule your exam.

What if I have to cancel my test date after scheduling the exam?

You may reschedule or cancel your exam if you do so at least two full days before your exam date. Canceling or rescheduling within 30 days of a scheduled exam date incurs a rescheduling fee of $70. Confirm the current cancellation and rescheduling guidelines with Pearson VUE when you schedule.

How is the PMP exam administered?

The PMP exam is a psychometrically based, computer exam of 180 questions offered by an independent testing company, Pearson VUE. Each question has one correct answer, and you have 240 minutes to complete the exam, including two 10-minute breaks. Many test-takers finish with little time to spare.

Each question has a difficulty level assigned by PMI, and the mix of difficult and easy questions determines how many you need to answer correctly. At the end of your exam you see a preliminary result, and PMI confirms your official result afterward. Your score report shows an overall pass/fail result plus diagnostic information on your performance in each domain, which gives specific guidance to both passing and failing candidates.

What study materials are needed to prepare for the exam?

We provide complete course materials: hundreds of pages of information, study aids and references, plus a 90-day subscription to our online learning and exam simulator with over 1,000 practice questions.

We encourage students to get the current edition of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge® (PMBOK® Guide), available from the PMI Bookstore or other retailers. PMI members have access to a free digital copy online.

Exam questions are written and extensively reviewed by qualified PMP credential holders and tracked to at least two academic references. They are mapped to the PMP Examination Content Outline so the exam has an appropriate number of questions in each area. Sample exam questions and suggested reading are also available on the PMI website.

How many hours of study time are necessary to pass the exam?

The amount varies with your learning style and comfort level. Plan on roughly 20 to 40 hours of study in addition to class time. A realistic, successful study plan looks like this:

  • Begin reading the PMBOK® Guide
  • Read the pre-class advance reading guide we provide when you register
  • Consider joining a study group for support
  • Attend all days of an instructor-led class
  • Use our exam simulator to take practice exams until you are comfortable and scoring well
  • If you consistently score above 80% on our practice exams, or when your instructor gives you the green light, you are ready to take the exam
What is Exam Assurance, your 100% money-back pass guarantee?

We back our PMP Boot Camp with a 100% money-back guarantee, and we spell out exactly what it does and does not cover. Read the guarantee terms.

How long is the class, and can I take it online?

The in-person PMP Boot Camp is four consecutive days of live instruction, Monday through Thursday. We also offer online training delivered live by an expert instructor via webinar, with the same curriculum as our face-to-face classes, from the comfort of your home. See the live online PMP class.
